Atunci când am studiat designul vestimentar mi-am dorit intotdeauna o carte despre tesaturi, cu tot ce e util pentru a le invata corect si a le aplica in design. Desigur, aveam cartile pentru ingineri textili, insa acelea sunt prea tehnice pentru designeri si nu erau ilustrate. Sau cele de textile inteligente cu imagini frumoase dar cu tesaturi pe care nu le gaseai nicaieri. Am avut si colectia de tesaturi,
tissuthèque, la scoala de moda din Paris unde am studiat. Insa, abia in 2010 am gasit cartea la care visam cu multi ani in urma, scrisa exact pentru designeri si evident, semnata de profesori din Londra (London College of Fashion) cu o prezentare realizata de decanul de la Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design Fabric for Fashion. Mai precis 2 carti, un manual si un ghid cu mostre textile.
Fabric For Fashion: A Comprehensive Guide prezinta tot ce trebuie sa cunoasca un designer despre fibrele textile naturale pâna la ultimele exemple din tesaturile inteligente (tot naturale), totul intr-o prezentare concisa si fara detalii inutile. Este ideala pentru debutantii in moda sau ca suport de curs.

O a doua carte scrisa de aceiasi autori, este de fapt un ghid vizual al fibrelor, fotografiate in toate ipostazele pentru a putea fi recunoscute, un memo foarte util (70 pagini) cu mostre de material atasate.
Insa povestea minunata a fibrelor textile nu se opreste aici. Daca aceste doua lucrari reprezinta esentialul si baza oricarui studiu in domeniu pentru un designer, o carte cu totul speciala, lansata tot in aceasta luna, trateaza subiectul intr-un mod exhaustiv si detaliat.
Fabric Science
este o lucrare fundamentala ajunsa la a 9-a editie si editata de Allen C. Cohen, profesor emerit la "Fashion Institute of Technology" (F.I.T) si Ingrid Johnson, profesor tot la F.I.T. In 432 de pagini si 16 capitole aceasta Biblie a textilelor trateaza tot ce inseamna azi industrie textila, cu toate tipurile de fibre, tesaturi pina la imprimare, finisare, pastrare si renovare, textile de interios si legislatie cu ultimele inovatii din domeniu. La rândul ei, aceasta lucrare este acompaniata de
Fabric Science Swatch Kit (9th Edition), un ghid cu mostre si detalii tehnice.

Am selectat o parte din cuprinsul lucrarii pentru a arata cât de vast este acest domeniu si cât de putine aspecte sunt integrate in designul contemporan românesc (desi câtiva tineri designeri au inceput sa mizeze pe textilele viitorului). Inovatia textila este fundamentala in creatia autentica, din pacate acesta este un domeniu cu totul strain multor nume cunoscute de designeri români, adesea din ignoranta proprie.
